How to Dispose of Sharps and Needles Safely

medical needles

If you or someone in your household uses insulin needles, lancets, an EpiPen, or any other sharp medical device, you already know they can’t just go in the trash. Here’s what actually counts as a “sharp,” why it matters, and the easiest way to get rid of a full container.

What Counts as a “Sharp”?

  • Needles and syringes, including insulin pens and pen needles
  • Lancets used for blood glucose testing
  • Auto-injectors like EpiPens, once used or expired
  • Any other device with a point or blade that’s been in contact with blood or medication

Why Sharps Can’t Go in Regular Trash or Recycling

A used sharp can puncture skin and transmit bloodborne illness even after it’s been thrown out, which puts waste-collection workers and anyone else who handles the bag at risk. That’s why sharps need a dedicated, puncture-proof container rather than going loose into household trash or recycling.

Building a Home Sharps Container

Until you’re ready to drop off, keep sharps in a proper puncture-proof container; a purpose-made sharps container is best, though a heavy-duty plastic container with a tight, secure lid can work in a pinch. Ask your pharmacist if you need help getting a proper sharps container. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and never try to recap, bend, or break a needle by hand.

What Happens After You Drop It Off
