There are a lot of pharmacies in Ottawa. Many of them can fill your prescription accurately and hand it to you in a reasonable amount of time. That is the baseline. It is not a philosophy.
At Centrum Pharmacy, we have organized everything we do around four principles. We call them the Four Cs: Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, and Connected. These are not marketing words. They describe a specific way of practising community pharmacy that is different from what most patients have experienced elsewhere. This post explains what each one means in practice.
Complete
A complete pharmacy is one where you do not need to go somewhere else.
When most people think of a pharmacy, they think of prescription pickup. That is one part of what we do. But our patients also come to us for medication reviews, diabetes education, medication blister packaging, GLP-1 support, minor ailment assessments, and when we can’t meet your needs, we have community partners who can. Direct same day referrals to walk in physicians.
We stock a broad range of over-the-counter medications, medical supplies, and specialty health products. When something is not on the shelf, our team works to source it or provide a clinical alternative.
Complete means that a patient who walks through our door with a complex or unusual need is not turned away with a shrug and a suggestion to try somewhere else. It means we have built the services, and the clinical expertise to handle the full range of what a community needs from its pharmacy. We have been serving the Orleans Community for over 25 years.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive refers to how we look at each patient, not just the prescription in front of us.
A pharmacy that dispenses in isolation is filling a bottle. A pharmacist who practises comprehensively is managing a person’s health. That means reviewing your full medication list for interactions, looking for duplications that can accumulate when multiple prescribers are involved, identifying side effects that might be attributed to something other than the medication causing them, and counselling you on how to take each medication correctly for it to actually work.
It also means being proactive. Patients who pick up their first prescription for a new chronic condition may not fully understand what it is for, how long they will need to take it, or what to watch for. Comprehensive care means we do not assume someone has already been told the important things. We make sure they have.
This approach matters most for patients managing multiple conditions and multiple medications simultaneously. In those cases, the pharmacist who takes a comprehensive view of the full picture is often the most important clinician in the room.
Caring
Caring is the one that cannot be faked for long.
It means we know your name. It means when you mention something in passing, we write it down and ask about it next time. It means we take the extra five minutes to explain something properly rather than handing you a printout. It means we call the prescriber when something does not look right, even when it would be easier not to.
It also means we treat every patient with the same level of attention regardless of how busy the dispensary is or how straightforward the prescription appears. The patient who comes in weekly for a complex specialty medication and the patient who comes in once a year for a five-day antibiotic both deserve to feel like they are being seen.
Caring is the reason so many of our patients have stayed with us for years, and in some cases, for generations. It is also the reason we routinely see several generations of the same family. After all, our motto is “Caring for Your Family”
Connected
Connected is about recognizing that good pharmacy care does not happen in a silo.
We work directly with Orleans Family Health Clinic, which shares our address at 210 Centrum Blvd. That proximity means that when a patient’s medication situation requires a conversation with a physician, that conversation happens quickly. When a clinical question arises on either side, the answer does not require navigating bureaucratic communication delays. Pharmacists and physicians at this location communicate with the kind of directness and speed that produces better outcomes for patients. Doctors from the clinic routinely walk into the dispensary to ask our pharmacists medication questions for a patient that might happen to be in the exam room at that time.
Connected also means we are integrated with the broader healthcare system. We share patient information appropriately with other care providers. We stay current on updated clinical guidelines, emerging drug therapies, and the evidence that drives best practice. We participate in programs that extend pharmacy care into areas where patients have historically had to manage on their own.
And at the most human level, Connected means we are part of this community. Orleans is not just a service area. It is where we live, where our patients live, where their children grow up, and in many cases, where three generations of a family have chosen to receive their care at Centrum Pharmacy. We take that responsibility towards the community we live in seriously.
Why the Four Cs Matter
The Canadian healthcare system is under real pressure. Wait times are long. Access to primary care is inconsistent. Patients are being asked to navigate a system that does not always have a clear path forward for them.
Community pharmacy is one of the most accessible points in that system. No appointment required. Walk in anytime. A licensed clinician available for a conversation that might save a trip to a walk-in or an emergency room.
Centrum Pharmacy Gives back to our Community: There is an acute shortage of family doctors in Orleans and Ottawa. Centrum Pharmacy is here to help! At Centrum pharmacy we are committed to ensuring our patients have access to timely healthcare services. That means bringing more family doctors to Orleans communities.
Centrum Pharmacy takes pride in recruiting and sponsoring physicians to practice in the Orleans community. This spring, the number of family physicians recruited to the Orleans Community by Centrum Pharmacy will have reached fifteen. We are proud to say that through our efforts, thousands of citizens previously without a physician have found a family doctor, directly due to our efforts.
The Four Cs are our commitment to making that access worth something. Not just convenient, but clinically meaningful. Not just efficient, but genuinely caring. Not just a stop on the way home, but a real anchor of connected, comprehensive health care in your neighbourhood.
That is what we are building here. It is what we have been building since 1999.
