At Centrum Pharmacy, we are proud to celebrate Roy Allen — a cherished longtime member of the “Centrum family” — for accomplishing something truly extraordinary at 100 years old.
This May, Roy walked the Ottawa 5K during Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, finishing in 1:47:19 with eight family members by his side. Race organizers confirmed that Roy is now the oldest person, and the first centenarian, in Canadian history to complete the event.
For our entire healthcare team, Roy’s story is more than inspiring. It is a powerful example of how healthy lifestyle habits, resilience, community connection, and active aging can profoundly influence long-term health and quality of life.
A Century of Healthy Living
Roy Allen celebrated his 100th birthday in April. Even now, he continues to embody principles of healthy aging that healthcare professionals encourage every day:
- Regular physical activity
- Lifelong movement and exercise
- Avoidance of smoking
- Avoidance of alcohol misuse
- Social engagement
- Purpose-driven living
- Mental resilience
Roy humorously credits his longevity to: “I never smoked, never drank alcohol, never did recreational drugs, and only one wife … no fooling around.”
Behind the humour is a remarkably consistent lifestyle centred on discipline, activity, and moderation.
According to his family, Roy incorporated movement into daily life for decades:
- Walking to work
- Swimming regularly
- Practicing gymnastics in his younger years
- Following Royal Canadian Air Force exercise programs
- Maintaining lifelong exercise routines well into older adulthood.
To prepare for race day, Roy completed several long training walks — including a full five-kilometre practice walk at Place d’Orléans.
Why Active Aging Matters
- Cardiovascular health
- Mobility
- Balance
- Cognitive health
- Mood and mental well-being
- Independence
- Overall quality of life
Regular movement can also help reduce the risk of:
- Falls
- Frailty
- Type 2 diabetes
- Heart disease
- Osteoporosis
- Depression
- Social isolation
Importantly, exercise in older adulthood does not need to involve intense athletic performance. Walking, swimming, stretching, strength training, and recreational activities can all contribute to healthier aging.
At Centrum Pharmacy, we regularly counsel patients on practical, realistic ways to stay active safely at every age and mobility level.
Supporting Caregivers and Dementia Care
Roy’s walk is also deeply meaningful because it supports organizations that have helped both him and his wife Melba, who is living with dementia.
He raised over $12,000 charities including:
His story highlights another critically important aspect of healthy aging: caregiver support and connected community care.
Families caring for loved ones with dementia often face:
- Emotional stress
- Caregiver burnout
- Medication management challenges
- Complex healthcare navigation
- Social isolation
- Financial strain
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists work closely with patients, caregivers, physicians, and allied healthcare teams to support medication management, cognitive health discussions, chronic disease care, and safer aging at home whenever possible.
Healthy Aging Requires Comprehensive, Connected Care
Roy’s remarkable achievement also reminds us that longevity alone is not the goal — maintaining independence, mobility, cognition, and purpose matters just as much.
This reflects Centrum Pharmacy’s “4 C’s” model of care:
- Complete Care
- Comprehensive Care
- Caring Care
- Connected Care
Our pharmacists provide:
- Medication reviews
- Chronic disease counselling
- Fall-risk medication assessments
- Vaccination services
- Minor ailment prescribing
- Caregiver support guidance
- Coordination with physicians and healthcare teams
As Ottawa’s population ages, proactive healthcare partnerships become increasingly important to help seniors remain active, safe, and independent.
It Is Never Too Late to Prioritize Health
One of the most encouraging aspects of Roy’s story is that healthy habits accumulated over time can continue delivering benefits even into advanced age.
While genetics certainly play a role in longevity, many important contributors to healthy aging remain modifiable:
- Physical activity
- Smoking avoidance
- Blood pressure management
- Diabetes control
- Healthy nutrition
- Sleep quality
- Social engagement
- Medication optimization
- Preventive healthcare
Even small lifestyle improvements can meaningfully improve long-term health outcomes.
Centrum Pharmacy Salutes Roy
Roy Allen’s determination, positivity, and resilience are an inspiration to the entire Ottawa community.
We are honoured to know him as part of the Centrum Pharmacy family and proudly salute his extraordinary accomplishment.
At 100 years old, Roy is not simply participating in a race — he is demonstrating that purpose, perseverance, and healthy living can continue to shape meaningful lives at every age.
From all of us at Centrum Pharmacy:
Congratulations, Roy. We are cheering you on every step of the way.
