We filled a prescription recently for a patient who mentioned, almost in passing, that her grandmother had been one of our first customers when we opened in 1999. Her mother had been coming to us for years. And now she was here, picking up her own medications and those of her young baby.
Four members of one family. Four generations. Twenty-seven years.
We have heard versions of this story more than a few times now, and it never stops meaning something to us.
What It Takes to Earn Four Generations
A family does not stay with a pharmacy across generations by accident. Convenience plays a role at first. Location, hours, parking. But those are the reasons people try a pharmacy. They are not the reasons people stay.
People stay because someone remembered that they were nervous about a new medication and took the time to explain it properly. They stay because their mother was treated with patience and respect when she came in with a complicated medication list and a lot of questions. They stay because when something was wrong, we noticed, and we said something.
Generations of trust is built one interaction at a time. It is the pharmacist who calls to check in. The team member who notices something unusual in a refill pattern. The extra five minutes given to someone who needed them.
We have been caring for Orleans families since 1999, and what that means, in practical terms, is that we have learned to think in decades, not just prescriptions.
The Orleans Community We Serve
Orleans has changed significantly since Centrum Pharmacy opened. New subdivisions. A growing and increasingly diverse population. Families that arrived with children who are now having children of their own.
Some of what has stayed the same: the importance of having a healthcare provider who knows you. Who knows your history. Who does not need you to start from the beginning every time.
That kind of continuity of care is harder to find in a healthcare system that is increasingly stretched. Family doctors are harder to access. Referral wait times are long. In that environment, a pharmacist who has known a patient for ten or twenty years is not just a convenience. They are a clinical asset.
We work directly with Orleans Family Health Clinic at 210 Centrum Blvd. to make sure that continuity extends across the full care team. When your pharmacist and your physician are in the same building and communicate directly, the gaps in care get smaller.
How We Think About Multigenerational Care
Caring for three generations of a family is not the same as caring for three individual patients who happen to share a last name.
It means understanding patterns. Knowing that a particular medication history runs in a family, and watching for it. Knowing that a grandparent’s adherence challenges may show up in the same form in a grandchild twenty years later. Recognizing the dynamics that affect whether someone fills their prescription at all.
It also means adapting. The grandmother who picks up her own medications. The parent who manages medications for a child and an aging parent simultaneously. The young adult navigating a new diagnosis on their own for the first time. Each stage of life comes with its own clinical needs, its own questions, and its own version of what good pharmacy care looks like.
Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, and Connected care means we meet each family member where they are, at every stage.
Why This Matters to Us
There are pharmacies that measure success in volume. Scripts per hour. Average transaction time. Revenue per square foot.
We measure it in something else. In the patient who drove past two other pharmacies to get here. In the family that called us from the hospital to ask what to do before they called anyone else. In the grandmother who told us her granddaughter would be coming in, and to take good care of her.
That trust is the most serious responsibility we carry. We do not take it for granted.
If you are new to Orleans, or new to Centrum Pharmacy, we would be glad to earn your trust too. And if you have been with us since the beginning, thank you. We are still here, and we plan to be.
