Get Prescriptions for Antibiotics and Treatment for other Minor Ailments from a Centrum Pharmacist
Minor ailments are short-term issues that don’t require lab tests and can be treated with minimal intervention. Ontario Pharmacists are able to diagnose and treat 20 different medical conditions. This includes antibiotics for common infections like UTI, and pink eye.
Our Pharmacists can diagnose and prescribe treatments in Orleans with no appointment needed. If necessary, they can also refer you to a doctor, primary care provider or emergency facility.
Can Pharmacists Prescribe Antibiotics?
Yes! Ontario pharmacists are authorized to prescribe antibiotics for certain minor ailments. This includes common conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs), and pink eye, when appropriate. At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists are trained to assess your symptoms, determine if antibiotics are needed, and provide treatment — all without a doctor’s appointment. If your condition requires further care, we can refer you to our Virtual or In-Person Walk-In Clinic.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common occurrence, particularly among women. Bacteria is the culprit behind the inflammation and irritation of the bladder and urethra lining. Please note that we currently can only assess female patients.

Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation and irritation of the eye caused by allergies, viruses, or bacteria. The most effective treatment for this condition depends on the underlying cause.

Cold sores, which can be painful and cause unsightly sores on your lips and around your nose, are caused by viruses that remain dormant until triggered by factors such as stress.

Oral thrush is an infection in the mouth that is caused by a yeast called candida that produces a thick, white coating on the tongue, the inside of the cheeks and lips, or gums.

If you are suffering from a skin rash, such as eczema or contact dermatitis (caused by poison ivy or other sources), our pharmacists can help you manage it.

If you experience heartburn due to stomach acid flowing back up into the esophagus, our pharmacists can help. This condition is known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.

If you have itchy bumps on your skin caused by insect bites, known as hives, your pharmacist can help you find relief from the discomfort.

A tick bite can transmit bacteria that cause Lyme Disease, which can be serious. Your pharmacist can help you to prevent it.

It is estimated that around half of Canadians will suffer from hemorrhoids by the age of 50. This condition is caused by swollen and inflamed veins, and there are medications available to help reduce the discomfort associated with it.

Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, can be so severe that it affects your quality of life. Fortunately, there are both medications and non-medicated strategies that can help alleviate the pain.

If you suffer from hay fever, the bothersome symptoms of sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny and itchy nose, and congestion can be controlled with our help.

Sprains are caused by a stretching or tearing of the ligament that connects two bones, while strains are due to the pulling or tearing of muscle fibers, such as in the leg.

Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that is most common in infants and children, and is characterized by red, itchy sores that usually appear on the face.

Acne typically starts during puberty when the skin becomes oilier. If left unaddressed, it can progress to severe acne, potentially resulting in scarring.

Canker sores manifest inside the cheeks or lips, on the tongue’s side, on the soft palate, or the mouth’s floor, and typically persist for approximately 7-10 days.

Pinworms, also referred to as threadworms, are parasitic organisms that can induce itching in the anal region. Pinworm infections are most prevalent among children aged 5 to 14 years.

Vaginal yeast infections are a prevalent source of discomfort. Common signs of such an infection involve sensations of itchiness, irritation, and a burning sensation in the vaginal region.

Irritant diaper rashes, which result from infrequent diaper changes or the use of harsh detergents, typically do not impact skin folds. However, those triggered by yeast infections can affect skin folds.

Nausea and vomiting, often referred to as “morning sickness,” are experienced by approximately 60-80% of pregnancies. This condition is more frequent during the early stages of pregnancy and typically resolves by the 20th week.

Paxlovid is an antiviral medication developed by Pfizer to treat COVID-19. It has received Emergency Use Authorization from health authorities and is designed to inhibit the replication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, potentially reducing the severity of symptoms and the risk of hospitalization in individuals with mild to moderate cases of COVID-19

Calluses and corns are areas of thickened, hardened skin that develop in response to repeated friction or pressure. Calluses typically form on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands, while corns are smaller and often appear on or between the toes. Both can cause discomfort or pain, especially with prolonged standing or walking.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flaking of the skin, often accompanied by itching. It can result from a variety of causes including an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast called Malassezia, dry scalp, sensitivity to hair products, or seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene, but it can be persistent and frustrating without the right treatment.

Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of the eye inadequately lubricated. It is a very common condition, particularly in adults over 50, people who spend long hours on screens, and those in dry or air-conditioned environments. Symptoms can range from mild irritation to persistent discomfort that affects daily activities.

Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live on the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They are most common in school-aged children and spread through direct head-to-head contact. Finding lice or their eggs (nits) in your child’s hair can be alarming, but head lice are not a sign of poor hygiene and are very treatable. Acting quickly helps prevent spread to other family members.

Jock itch, known medically as tinea cruris, is a fungal infection of the skin in the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. It is caused by the same group of fungi responsible for athlete’s foot and ringworm. The condition is more common in men, athletes, and people who sweat heavily, and it thrives in warm, moist environments. While uncomfortable and often embarrassing, jock itch is very treatable.

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, affecting people of all ages. Most headaches are tension-type headaches caused by stress, muscle tension, poor posture, dehydration, or eye strain. They are typically mild to moderate in intensity and respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers and lifestyle adjustments. While most headaches are not a sign of anything serious, persistent or recurring headaches can significantly affect your quality of life.

Nasal congestion, or a stuffy nose, occurs when the tissues lining the nasal passages become swollen and inflamed due to increased blood flow. It is one of the most common symptoms Canadians experience and can result from a cold or flu, seasonal allergies, sinusitis, or environmental irritants. While nasal congestion is usually not serious, it can significantly disrupt sleep, work, and daily comfort.

Warts are small, rough skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear on the hands, fingers, feet (plantar warts), or other areas of the body. Warts are contagious and spread through direct contact with the virus, which can live on surfaces like locker room floors or shared equipment. While most warts are harmless and may eventually go away on their own, they can be persistent, uncomfortable, and embarrassing — and treatment speeds up resolution significantly.
