Flushing medication can send active drug compounds into the water supply, since most wastewater treatment isn’t designed to filter them out. Throwing pills in the household trash carries its own risks: they can be accidentally ingested by children or pets, or retrieved and misused by someone else. Neither method is safe, and neither is necessary when a proper disposal option exists close by.

- Don’t leave loose pills in a purse, bag, or on a counter
