A group of undergraduate students at the University of Ottawa is exploring an innovative solution: using plants as miniature pharmaceutical factories.
Introducing Phytogene: A Plant-Based Biomanufacturing Platform
In late 2023, a team of 23 University of Ottawa undergraduate students from multiple disciplines created Phytogene, a biomanufacturing platform designed to produce peptide-based medicines through plant molecular farming, also known as biopharming.
The project uses Nicotiana benthamiana, a plant closely related to tobacco, as a biological production system to manufacture therapeutic molecules, including GLP-1 receptor agonists — the same medication class as Ozempic. The concept: instead of relying exclusively on large pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, specially engineered plants could potentially become biological “factories” capable of producing complex medicines.
Why Are Researchers Exploring Plant-Based Medicine Production?
Traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing can involve complex chemical synthesis processes, significant infrastructure requirements, high production costs, large energy demands, and pharmaceutical supply chain vulnerabilities.

Does This Mean You Will Grow Ozempic in Your Backyard?
Not yet. While the idea sounds like science fiction, there are many important steps before plant-produced medications could become available to patients.
The University of Ottawa team has created a proof-of-concept model system, demonstrating that plants can produce functional GLP-1 agonist molecules. However, the product has not been tested in humans, safety and effectiveness must be established through rigorous research, and regulatory approval would be required before any patient use.
Producing a medication is much more complex than simply growing a plant. Pharmaceutical manufacturing requires strict controls for purity, dose accuracy, contamination prevention, stability, quality assurance, and clinical effectiveness.
