Generic Semaglutide Is Now Available in Canada — Here’s What You Need to Know

For years, the cost of Ozempic (semaglutide) has been a barrier for many Canadians managing type 2 diabetes. At $250 to $310 per month, the brand-name medication — despite its clinical effectiveness — was simply out of reach for patients without comprehensive drug coverage. That changed in the spring of 2026.

Canada became the first G7 country to approve a generic version of semaglutide. Health Canada authorized two manufacturers within days of each other: Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories on April 28, 2026, and Apotex — a Canadian company — on May 1, 2026. Both generics became available in Canadian pharmacies in May 2026, and the cost reduction compared to the brand-name product is significant.

Here is what patients at Centrum Pharmacy in Orléans need to know.

What Is Generic Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic, the once-weekly injectable medication manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It belongs to a class of medications called GLP-1 receptor agonists, which work by stimulating insulin release in response to meals, reducing glucagon secretion, and slowing gastric emptying — all of which help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

A generic medication contains the same active ingredient, at the same dose, delivered in the same way as the brand-name version. Health Canada’s approval process requires that generics demonstrate bioequivalence to the original — meaning the body absorbs and uses them in the same way. Generic semaglutide is not a lesser product. It is the same medication.

The two generics now available in Canada are:

• Apo-Semaglutide (Apotex) — the first Canadian-manufactured generic equivalent of Ozempic

• Dr. Reddy’s Semaglutide Injection

Both are approved for the once-weekly treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control.

How Much Can Patients Save by Using Generic Semaglutide?

The cost of generic semaglutide is substantially lower than brand-name Ozempic, which has ranged from $250 to $310 per month depending on dose. For patients who have been managing that cost out-of-pocket, the arrival of a generic represents a meaningful change.

Speak to our pharmacists at Centrum Pharmacy about current pricing and what to expect based on your specific dose and coverage situation.

Is Generic Semaglutide Covered by Insurance or ODB?

Coverage for semaglutide — both brand and generic — is currently governed by the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program for eligible patients. To qualify for ODB coverage, you must have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and meet specific Limited Use (LU) criteria, which typically include inadequate blood sugar control despite treatment with metformin.

Generic semaglutide’s listing on public drug plans, including ODB, is still being determined as of mid-2026. Private insurance plans are making their own coverage decisions on a plan-by-plan basis. Some plans that previously covered brand-name Ozempic may transition coverage to the generic; others may extend coverage more broadly given the lower cost.

Important: coverage decisions for semaglutide — brand or generic — are specific to type 2 diabetes management. Neither the brand nor any currently approved generic carries an indication for weight loss in Canada. Wegovy (higher-dose semaglutide for obesity management) is a separate product with separate coverage pathways.

Speaking with your pharmacist about your specific coverage situation is the most reliable way to understand what applies to your plan.

Should You Switch from Brand-Name Ozempic to Generic Semaglutide?

If you are currently taking Ozempic and managing your type 2 diabetes effectively, your pharmacist can advise you on whether switching to generic semaglutide makes clinical and practical sense for your situation. For many patients, the answer will be yes — the medication is bioequivalent, the injection device is comparable, and the cost savings are real.

However, any medication change should be made with guidance from your pharmacist and prescribing physician. There are individual factors — injection technique, device familiarity, insurance coverage transitions, and overall medication management — that are worth discussing before making a switch.

At Centrum Pharmacy, our team provides Complete, Comprehensive, Caring, and Connected Care. That means we don’t simply dispense a prescription and send you on your way. Our pharmacists take the time to review your full medication profile, explain how your medications work, and make sure any transitions — including switching from brand to generic — are handled safely and with continuity.

What Generic Semaglutide Is NOT Approved For

This is an important point that has caused confusion in public reporting. The generic semaglutide products approved by Health Canada in 2026 are approved for type 2 diabetes management only. They are not approved for weight loss or obesity management.

Wegovy — a higher-dose semaglutide product from Novo Nordisk — is the version approved for chronic weight management in Canada. There is currently no approved generic equivalent of Wegovy. Patients seeking semaglutide for weight management will need to speak with their physician about appropriate options, and should be cautious about online or compounding sources that may not meet Canadian safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is generic Ozempic available in Canada?

Yes. As of May 2026, Canada became the first G7 country to have approved generic semaglutide. Two generics are now available at Canadian pharmacies: Apo-Semaglutide by Apotex and a generic by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. Both were approved by Health Canada and are available by prescription.

What is Apo-Semaglutide?

Apo-Semaglutide is the brand name for Apotex’s generic version of semaglutide — the active ingredient in Ozempic. Apotex is a Canadian pharmaceutical company, making Apo-Semaglutide the first Canadian-manufactured generic equivalent of Ozempic to receive Health Canada approval. It is available in the same pen configurations as the brand-name product.

Is generic semaglutide the same as Ozempic?

Yes. Generic semaglutide contains the same active ingredient at the same dose and is delivered in the same way as Ozempic. Health Canada requires all generics to demonstrate bioequivalence to the original — meaning the body absorbs and processes them identically. Generic semaglutide is not a lesser product. It is the same medication under a different name.

How much does generic semaglutide cost in Canada?

Generic semaglutide is significantly less expensive than brand-name Ozempic, which has ranged from $250 to $310 per month. Speak to our pharmacists at Centrum Pharmacy for current pricing based on your dose and coverage situation, as costs vary by pharmacy and plan.

Is generic semaglutide covered by OHIP or the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB)?

Coverage for generic semaglutide under public drug plans including ODB is still being determined as of mid-2026. Brand-name Ozempic has been covered under ODB for eligible patients with type 2 diabetes who meet specific Limited Use criteria. Private insurance coverage varies by plan. Your pharmacist can help you understand what your specific plan covers.

Can I switch from brand-name Ozempic to generic semaglutide?

For most patients, switching is clinically straightforward since the medications are bioequivalent. However, you should speak with your pharmacist and physician before making any change. Individual factors — including injection device differences, coverage transitions, and your current diabetes management — are worth reviewing before switching.

Is generic semaglutide approved for weight loss in Canada?

No. The generic semaglutide products currently approved by Health Canada are indicated for type 2 diabetes management only. They are not approved for weight loss or obesity management. Wegovy — a higher-dose semaglutide product from Novo Nordisk — is the version approved for chronic weight management in Canada, and there is currently no approved generic equivalent of Wegovy.

What is the difference between Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus?

All three contain semaglutide but differ in form, dose, and indication. Ozempic is a once-weekly injectable approved for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is a higher-dose once-weekly injectable approved for chronic weight management. Rybelsus is an oral (tablet) form of semaglutide approved for type 2 diabetes. Generic versions are currently available only for the injectable semaglutide equivalent to Ozempic.

Do I need a new prescription to get generic semaglutide?

In most cases your existing prescription for semaglutide can be filled with the generic. Your pharmacist can advise on whether any prescription update is needed based on how your original prescription was written. Speak to our team at Centrum Pharmacy and we will handle the details.
