The primary role of a community pharmacy is to serve as a hub for health, wellness, and evidence-based guidance. At Centrum Pharmacy, we believe this responsibility extends beyond the prescriptions we fill; it includes the products we choose to provide—and those we choose to exclude.
In recent weeks, a significant shift has begun within the Canadian pharmaceutical landscape. Several pharmacies in Quebec, led by the Familiprix chain, have made the decision to remove energy drinks from their shelves entirely. This move comes in response to growing public concern and professional advocacy regarding the health risks these high-caffeine beverages pose, particularly to youth.
The Human Cost of High-Caffeine Stimulants
The momentum for this change is deeply rooted in tragedy. The advocacy of the Miron family, following the passing of their 15-year-old son Zachary, has brought a critical issue to the forefront of public health. Zachary’s death, which occurred after consuming an energy drink while on medication for ADHD, highlights a dangerous and often overlooked interaction.
Stimulant medications—commonly prescribed for ADHD—can interact with the high levels of caffeine and synthetic stimulants found in energy drinks, putting undue stress on the cardiovascular system.
Professional Advocacy and Policy
It is not only families calling for change. Quebec’s Order of Pharmacists has formally joined the call to restrict the sale of these beverages to individuals aged 16 and older. The concerns are well-supported by a broad coalition, including:
- Public health associations
- School boards and educators
- Junior sports leagues
- Medical professionals
The petition currently before the Quebec government has garnered over 35,000 signatures, signaling a clear mandate for stricter regulations.
Our Commitment at Centrum Pharmacy
At Centrum Pharmacy, we have always prioritized your health over profit. This is why you will not find harmful energy drinks on our shelves.
We recognize that pharmacies are healthcare environments. Stocking products that carry significant risks of heart palpitations, anxiety, sleep disruption, and dangerous drug interactions contradicts our mission to provide a safe, access-focused healthcare experience. We stand in solidarity with the families and healthcare professionals advocating for a safer retail environment for our children.
Your well-being is our priority. If you have questions about caffeine consumption, heart health, or how energy drinks might interact with your current medications, our clinical team is always available to provide evidence-based advice.
