A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal confirms what many healthcare providers have observed anecdotally—obesity rates in Canada rose significantly faster during the COVID-19 pandemic than in the previous decade, especially among young adults.
Researchers tracked the BMI of nearly 750,000 adults over a 15-year period and found that while obesity increased by 8% between 2009 and 2020, the rate accelerated to more than 1 percentage point per year between 2020 and 2023—double the pre-pandemic pace.
The spike was most dramatic in younger Canadians, especially young women, who saw a 4.7% rise in obesity rates during the three pandemic years. Experts suggest this was due to pandemic-related lifestyle disruptions: the closure of gyms, extracurricular activities, schools, and workplaces stripped away routine, increased screen time, and brought individuals physically closer to their kitchens—what one pediatric endocrinologist called “a perfect storm.”
But weight gain during this period wasn’t only about movement or food. Stress, job loss, caregiving burdens, and mental health challenges played a major role. While the study calls for further research into causes and prevention, one clear need is already evident: accessible, structured, non-judgmental obesity care services.
