On October 18, 1929, women in Canada were recognized as persons under the law.
This Persons Day, and throughout Women’s History Month in October, Centrum Pharmacy honours the women who made that decision possible.
The ruling, known as the Persons Case, came from the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. It confirmed that women are “persons” under the law and eligible to be appointed to the Senate. It followed years of effort by five Alberta women, Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Irene Parlby, who became known as the Famous Five.
Their persistence changed what was possible for generations of women who came after them, in public life, in the professions and in healthcare.
The ruling did not extend to every woman, including Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage, and the work toward equality continued long after 1929.
We also want to thank the women who shape our community every day: our patients, our colleagues, and the mothers, daughters, caregivers and professionals who keep families healthy. Supporting women’s health is a big part of the care we provide at the pharmacy.
Happy Persons Day, and thank you to every woman who makes a difference.
