Canadian Vaccination Week runs April 26 to May 2 this year, and we’d like to take a moment to mark it.
Vaccines are one of the most significant reasons many of the diseases that defined childhood illness a generation ago are now uncommon in Canada. That progress didn’t happen automatically, it happened because communities, families, and healthcare providers kept showing up. And it only holds as long as we keep doing the same.
The challenge of misinformation
One of the quieter threats to community health right now isn’t a new virus, it’s misinformation. Inaccurate claims about vaccines have made their way into everyday conversations, and the effects are starting to show. Diseases like measles, which Canada had largely brought under control, can resurface when vaccination rates fall even modestly. Ottawa Public Health maintains a current resource on measles in our region if you’d like to understand where things stand locally.
What’s on our minds this Vaccination Week
We’ve written about a few vaccine-related topics over the past year that feel especially relevant right now.
Timing matters more than you think.
Many vaccines need time to take full effect, which means staying ahead of the curve rather than waiting until you’re already exposed. Our post on timely vaccination is a good place to start if you’ve been meaning to catch up.
Shingles is one of the most commonly overlooked vaccines in Canada.
If you’re over 50 and haven’t looked into your options, it’s worth understanding. Shingles affects roughly 1 in 3 Canadians over a lifetime, and the complications can be significant and long-lasting. We’ve covered everything you need to know.
Seasonal Vaccination
When you’re ready, our team is here. We offer flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinations. Visit our vaccination page to learn more. And if you have questions in the meantime, we’d love to hear from you.
