Shingles: What you Need to Know

Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the one that caused your chickenpox), which lies dormant in your nervous system. Approximately 1 in 3 Canadians will develop shingles in their lifetime, and Canada sees roughly 130,000 new cases every year. Risk increases substantially after age 50.

The most serious complication is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), nerve pain that persists long after the rash heals, sometimes for months or years.

Shingrix® (recombinant zoster vaccine) is the only shingles vaccine currently authorized in Canada. It’s a two-dose, non-live vaccine, with doses typically given two to six months apart. Shingrix has demonstrated over 90% effectiveness at preventing shingles in adults over 50, and significantly reduces the risk and severity of PHN when shingles does occur.

Shingrix commonly causes soreness at the injection site, fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes a low-grade fever for two to three days, a normal sign the vaccine is working.
