What’s New in Acne Management? Your Centrum Pharmacist Can Help

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin conditions affecting Canadians, particularly teenagers and young adults. According to the Canadian Dermatology Association, more than 80% of acne sufferers in Canada are between the ages of 12 and 24. While acne is often considered a normal part of adolescence, it can have a significant impact on self-esteem, confidence, and quality of life.

The good news is that acne treatment continues to evolve, and your pharmacist at Centrum Pharmacy can assess many cases of acne through Ontario’s Minor Ailment Prescribing Program and recommend or prescribe evidence-based treatments when appropriate.

Understanding Acne

Acne develops through a combination of factors: excess oil (sebum) production, blocked hair follicles, growth of Cutibacterium acnes bacteria, and inflammation of the skin. Researchers are also learning more about how the skin microbiome, gut microbiome, and environmental factors may influence acne severity.

Current First-Line Treatments Remain Effective

For mild-to-moderate acne, the foundation of treatment continues to include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics when appropriate, and combination therapies. These treatments target the underlying causes of acne and remain the most evidence-based options available.

However, concerns about antibiotic resistance and patient demand for gentler treatment options have prompted researchers to explore additional approaches.

New Research: The Gut-Skin Connection

Growing evidence suggests that the health of the gut microbiome may influence skin conditions, including acne. A 2026 systematic review involving more than 2,100 participants found that probiotics may help reduce inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, postbiotics showed promising results as adjunctive therapy, and prebiotics may provide additional support for skin health. While these products are not replacements for proven acne medications, they may serve as useful complementary therapies for some patients. Your pharmacist can help determine whether a probiotic may be appropriate as part of your overall acne management plan.

Environmental Factors May Play a Role

Researchers are also examining how air pollution affects skin health. Emerging evidence suggests exposure to traffic-related pollution and particulate matter may contribute to increased skin inflammation, oxidative stress, disruption of the skin microbiome, and worsening acne symptoms. While more research is needed, maintaining a consistent skincare routine and protecting skin from environmental stressors may be beneficial.

Natural and Plant-Based Therapies Under Investigation

Several plant extracts are being studied for potential benefits in acne management, including aloe vera, green tea extracts, turmeric, licorice root, and barberry extracts. Some studies suggest these ingredients may have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, or oil-regulating properties. However, more research is needed before they can be routinely recommended as primary acne treatments. Patients should be cautious about relying solely on online skincare trends or unproven supplements.
