Warts: What You Need to Know

Warts are small, rough skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear on the hands, fingers, feet (plantar warts), or other areas of the body. Warts are contagious and spread through direct contact with the virus, which can live on surfaces like locker room floors or shared equipment. While most warts are harmless and may eventually go away on their own, they can be persistent, uncomfortable, and embarrassing — and treatment speeds up resolution significantly.

If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area dealing with warts, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.

How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help

As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat warts in eligible patients.

At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:

  • Assess the growth and confirm the likely diagnosis.
  • Recommend or prescribe appropriate treatments, including salicylic acid preparations.
  • Advise on proper application technique and realistic timelines for treatment.
  • Provide guidance on preventing spread to other areas of the body or to others.
  • Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.

When Should You See a Pharmacist?

Come see us if you’re experiencing:

  • A rough, raised bump on your hands, fingers, or feet
  • A flat or slightly raised growth on the skin
  • Pain when walking or pressure on the bottom of the foot (plantar wart)
  • Multiple warts appearing over time
  • A wart that has been treated before but keeps returning

We may refer you to a doctor if:

  • Warts are on the face, genitals, or around the nails and require specialized treatment
  • The growth bleeds easily, changes rapidly, or does not look like a typical wart
  • You are immunocompromised or on medications that affect immunity
  • There is uncertainty about the diagnosis

What to Bring

  • Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
  • Information about any treatments you have already tried and for how long
  • A list of any medications you’re currently taking

Cost of Service

  • Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
  • You may be responsible for the cost of any prescribed or recommended products if not covered by your drug plan.

The sooner you’re assessed, the sooner we can help.

Tips to Help Prevent Warts

  • Avoid walking barefoot in communal areas such as pool decks and locker rooms.
  • Do not pick at warts, as this can spread the virus to other areas.
  • Keep warts covered with a bandage while undergoing treatment.
  • Wash hands regularly, especially after touching a wart.
  • Do not share towels, socks, or footwear.
