Tick Bites: What You Need to Know

Ticks are small insects found throughout the Ottawa and Orleans area, especially in wooded, grassy, or bushy areas. While many tick bites are harmless, some ticks — particularly blacklegged (deer) ticks — can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

If you’ve been bitten by a tick, early assessment and treatment are important to reduce your risk of developing Lyme disease. If you’re in Ottawa and Orleans, Learn how a Centrum Pharmacist can help.

How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help

Under Ontario’s Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and prescribe treatment for tick bites when certain criteria are met.

At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:

  • Assess your risk based on the tick bite location, duration of attachment, and time of year.
  • Review whether prophylactic (preventive) antibiotics are appropriate.
  • Prescribe a single-dose antibiotic (doxycycline) when indicated.
  • Provide education on tick removal, wound care, and prevention of future bites.
  • Advise you on when further medical attention may be needed.

When Should You See a Pharmacist?

Come see us promptly if:

  • You’ve removed a tick after recent outdoor activity in the Ottawa and Orleans area.
  • You know or suspect the tick has been attached for 24 hours or more.
  • You were bitten in an area of Ontario where blacklegged ticks are common (including Eastern Ontario).
  • It has been less than 72 hours since tick removal.

What to Bring

  • The tick, if possible (sealed in a container or baggie).
  • The approximate date and location of exposure.
  • Any medical history or medications you’re currently taking.

Cost of Service

  • Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
  • You may be responsible for any medication costs if not covered by your drug plan.

The sooner you’re assessed, the better the chance of preventing Lyme disease.
