Ringworm: What You Need to Know
Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a fungal skin infection, medically known as tinea corporis, that causes a distinctive ring-shaped, scaly, itchy rash on the skin. Ringworm can affect people of all ages and spreads through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or surface. It is the same family of fungi responsible for athlete’s foot and jock itch, and it is very treatable when caught early.
If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area and notice a ring-shaped rash, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.
How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help
As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat ringworm in eligible patients.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:
- Assess the affected area and confirm the likely diagnosis.
- Recommend or prescribe appropriate antifungal treatments.
- Advise on treatment duration and the importance of completing the full course.
- Provide guidance on preventing spread to other areas of the body or to other people.
- Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.
When Should You See a Pharmacist?
Come see us if you’re experiencing:
- A red, scaly, ring-shaped patch of skin that may be itchy
- A rash with a clearer centre and raised, active outer edge
- Multiple ring-shaped patches appearing on the skin
- A rash following contact with a pet, farm animal, or another person with a skin infection
We may refer you to a doctor if:
- The infection is on the scalp (tinea capitis), which requires oral treatment
- The rash is widespread or rapidly spreading
- There are signs of secondary bacterial infection
- You are immunocompromised or have diabetes
- The rash does not respond to topical antifungal treatment within two to four weeks
What to Bring
- Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
- Information about any treatments you have already tried
- A list of any medications you’re currently taking
Cost of Service
- Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
- You may be responsible for the cost of any prescribed or recommended products if not covered by your drug plan.
The sooner you’re assessed, the sooner we can help.
