Nasal Congestion: What You Need to Know

Nasal congestion, or a stuffy nose, occurs when the tissues lining the nasal passages become swollen and inflamed due to increased blood flow. It is one of the most common symptoms Canadians experience and can result from a cold or flu, seasonal allergies, sinusitis, or environmental irritants. While nasal congestion is usually not serious, it can significantly disrupt sleep, work, and daily comfort.

If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area dealing with nasal congestion, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.

How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help

As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat mild headaches in eligible patients.

At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:

  • Assess the likely cause of your congestion (viral, allergic, or other).
  • Recommend or prescribe appropriate treatments including decongestants, antihistamines, or nasal corticosteroid sprays.
  • Review your existing medications to avoid interactions with decongestants.
  • Advise on saline rinses and other non-medication approaches.
  • Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.

When Should You See a Pharmacist?

Come see us if you’re experiencing:

  • A blocked or stuffy nose lasting more than a few days
  • Nasal congestion related to seasonal allergies or a cold
  • Difficulty sleeping or breathing through your nose
  • Congestion that is not responding to over-the-counter products
  • Concern about which decongestant is safe for you given your health conditions

We may refer you to a doctor if:

  • Congestion is accompanied by a high fever or severe facial pain suggesting bacterial sinusitis
  • Symptoms have persisted for more than 10 days without improvement
  • There is a thick green or yellow discharge with pain or pressure in the face
  • You have high blood pressure or heart disease that limits decongestant options

What to Bring

  • Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
  • A list of any medications you’re currently taking, especially blood pressure medications
  • Details about how long symptoms have lasted and any known allergies or triggers

Cost of Service

  • Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
  • You may be responsible for the cost of any prescribed or recommended medications if not covered by your drug plan.

The sooner you’re assessed, the sooner we can help.
