Mild Headaches: What You Need to Know
Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, affecting people of all ages. Most headaches are tension-type headaches caused by stress, muscle tension, poor posture, dehydration, or eye strain. They are typically mild to moderate in intensity and respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers and lifestyle adjustments. While most headaches are not a sign of anything serious, persistent or recurring headaches can significantly affect your quality of life.
If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area dealing with frequent or bothersome headaches, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.
How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help
As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat mild headaches in eligible patients.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:
- Assess your headache pattern, duration, and triggers.
- Recommend or prescribe appropriate pain relief options.
- Review your current medications for potential headache-causing interactions or medication overuse.
- Advise on hydration, sleep, posture, and other lifestyle factors that contribute to headaches.
- Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.
When Should You See a Pharmacist?
Come see us if you’re experiencing:
- Mild to moderate headaches, especially tension-type or stress-related
- Frequent headaches that are disrupting daily life
- Headaches you suspect may be related to a medication or supplement
- Questions about safe pain reliever options during pregnancy or with other conditions
We may refer you to a doctor if:
- Your headache is sudden and extremely severe (thunderclap headache)
- Headache is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, confusion, or vision changes
- You experience weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking
- Headaches are progressively worsening over days or weeks
- The headache follows a head injury
What to Bring
- Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
- A list of any medications, vitamins, or supplements you’re currently taking
- Notes on headache frequency, location, and any known triggers
Cost of Service
- Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
- You may be responsible for the cost of any prescribed or recommended medications if not covered by your drug plan.
