Dandruff: What You Need to Know
Dandruff is a common scalp condition that causes flaking of the skin, often accompanied by itching. It can result from a variety of causes including an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast called Malassezia, dry scalp, sensitivity to hair products, or seborrheic dermatitis. Dandruff is not contagious and is not caused by poor hygiene, but it can be persistent and frustrating without the right treatment.
If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area and struggling with dandruff, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.
How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help
As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat dandruff in eligible patients.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:
- Assess your scalp and identify the likely cause of flaking.
- Recommend or prescribe medicated shampoos containing ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole, or coal tar.
- Advise on proper use and frequency of treatment shampoos.
- Provide guidance on scalp care and product sensitivities.
- Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.
When Should You See a Pharmacist?
Come see us if you’re experiencing:
- White or yellowish flakes on your scalp, hair, or shoulders
- An itchy, irritated, or dry scalp
- Oily, scaly patches on the scalp
- Flaking that has not improved with over-the-counter shampoos
We may refer you to a doctor if:
- Redness or scaling spreads to your face, ears, or eyebrows
- You have a rash, hair loss, or significant scalp inflammation
- Symptoms do not improve after several weeks of treatment
- There is suspicion of psoriasis or another skin condition
What to Bring
- Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
- A list of any hair products or shampoos you currently use
- A list of any medications you’re currently taking
Cost of Service
- Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.

Tips to Help Manage Dandruff
- Use a medicated shampoo regularly and follow label instructions for lathering and rinsing time.
- Avoid harsh styling products that can irritate the scalp.
- Manage stress, which can worsen dandruff flares.
- Wash hair regularly but avoid over-washing, which can dry out the scalp.
- Expose your scalp to moderate sunlight when possible, as UV light may reduce Malassezia growth.
