Since coming to power, the Ford government has aimed to improve Ontarians’ access to primary healthcare despite significant challenges, notably a longstanding shortage of primary care providers. This shortage is complex and systemic, having persisted across various administrations. Addressing it requires more than financial input or simplified solutions due to the many stakeholders involved, each with distinct interests. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has long been associated with daylight exposure, and it’s well-established that increased daylight can benefit those with SAD. However, the impact of external light on nonseasonal depressive disorders is less clear. To explore this, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of bright light therapy as a supplementary treatment for nonseasonal depression. Bright light therapy, in this context, involves using a fluorescent light box that emits white light, typically at 10,000 lux, for a minimum of 30 minutes. (more…)

A flu vaccine is needed every season for three reasons:  

First, a person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection:

Second, because flu viruses are constantly changing, flu vaccines may be updated from one season to the next to protect against the viruses that research suggests may be most common during the upcoming flu season. 

Third, the flu vaccine also helps protect people close to you because you’re less likely to spread the flu to them if you’re vaccinated.

Canada’s pharmacare bill has officially become law, aiming to broaden access to essential medications like treatments for diabetes and contraception, which can cost Canadians hundreds or even thousands of dollars annually. However, provincial agreements are still being negotiated, meaning that coverage under Bill C-64 will only be available in provinces that finalize deals with the federal government.
