Jock Itch: What You Need to Know

Jock itch, known medically as tinea cruris, is a fungal infection of the skin in the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. It is caused by the same group of fungi responsible for athlete’s foot and ringworm. The condition is more common in men, athletes, and people who sweat heavily, and it thrives in warm, moist environments. While uncomfortable and often embarrassing, jock itch is very treatable.

If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area dealing with jock itch, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.

How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help

As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat jock itch in eligible patients.

At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:

  • Assess your symptoms and confirm the likely diagnosis.
  • Recommend or prescribe appropriate antifungal treatments, including topical creams or powders.
  • Advise on proper application and treatment duration to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide guidance on hygiene, clothing, and moisture control.
  • Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.

When Should You See a Pharmacist?

Come see us if you’re experiencing:

  • A red, itchy, ring-shaped rash in the groin area or inner thighs
  • Burning or chafing in the affected area
  • Flaking, peeling, or cracked skin
  • A rash that worsens with physical activity or sweating
  • Symptoms that have not improved with over-the-counter antifungal products

We may refer you to a doctor if:

  • The rash spreads beyond the groin to the genitals or other areas
  • There are signs of a secondary bacterial infection
  • Symptoms do not improve after two to four weeks of antifungal treatment
  • You have diabetes or a weakened immune system

What to Bring

  • Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
  • Information about any treatments you have already tried
  • A list of any medications you’re currently taking

Cost of Service

  • Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
  • You may be responsible for the cost of any prescribed or recommended products if not covered by your drug plan.

The sooner you’re assessed, the sooner we can help.

Tips to Help Prevent Jock Itch

  • Keep the groin area clean and dry, especially after exercise or sweating.
  • Change out of wet or sweaty clothing promptly.
  • Wear loose-fitting, breathable underwear and clothing.
  • Treat athlete’s foot at the same time if present, as the same fungus can spread from feet to groin.
  • Avoid sharing towels, clothing, or athletic gear.
