Dry Eye: What You Need to Know
Dry eye occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of the eye inadequately lubricated. It is a very common condition, particularly in adults over 50, people who spend long hours on screens, and those in dry or air-conditioned environments. Symptoms can range from mild irritation to persistent discomfort that affects daily activities.
If you’re in the Ottawa or Orleans area and experiencing dry eye symptoms, Centrum Pharmacy can help — no doctor’s appointment required.
How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help
As of July 2026, under Ontario’s expanded Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess and treat dry eye in eligible patients.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:
- Assess your symptoms and identify likely contributing factors.
- Recommend or prescribe appropriate artificial tears, lubricating eye drops, or ointments.
- Advise on environmental modifications and screen habits that worsen dry eye.
- Provide guidance on proper eye drop use and frequency.
- Advise you when to seek further medical care if necessary.
When Should You See a Pharmacist?
Come see us if you’re experiencing:
- A stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation in your eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Redness of the eye
- Blurred vision, especially after prolonged reading or screen use
- A feeling of something in your eye
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
We may refer you to a doctor if:
- You experience sudden vision changes or significant vision loss
- There is eye pain, severe redness, or discharge suggesting infection
- Symptoms are related to an underlying condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s syndrome
- Over-the-counter treatments have not provided adequate relief
What to Bring
- Your Ontario health card (OHIP)
- A list of any eye drops or medications you’re currently using
- Information about your screen time, environment, and contact lens use
Cost of Service
- Pharmacist assessment is fully covered by OHIP for eligible Ontario residents.
- You may be responsible for the cost of any recommended products if not covered by your drug plan.
The sooner you’re assessed, the sooner we can help.

Tips to Help Manage Dry Eye
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Use a humidifier in dry indoor environments, especially in Ottawa winters.
- Avoid air vents blowing directly at your face.
- Blink consciously and fully when using screens.
- Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors to reduce wind exposure.
