What to Do if You May Have Been Exposed
1. Monitor for Symptoms for 21 Days
Even if you are vaccinated, watch for:
- High fever
- Cough and runny nose
- White spots in the mouth
- Red, watery, light-sensitive eyes
- Rash that starts on the face and spreads down the body (appears a few days after initial symptoms)
If symptoms develop:
- Call your health care provider before visiting and inform them of your possible measles exposure.
- Wear a medical-grade mask to your appointment.
- If you do not have a primary care provider, contact Health811 (8-1-1) for free, confidential advice from a registered nurse (available 24/7).
2. Check Your Vaccination Records
The measles vaccine may appear on your records as MMR, MMRV, or M.
- Ontario’s routine schedule includes two doses: one at 12 months and another between ages 4–6.
- People born before 1970 are generally considered immune.
- Those born in or after 1970 should ensure they have two documented doses for full protection.
If you are unsure, check with your health care provider.
