At Centrum Pharmacy, we often talk about diet, exercise, and medication when it comes to heart health—but sleep is just as critical.
A new study out of Uppsala University in Sweden reveals that even three nights of restricted sleep (just 4 hours a night) can lead to real, measurable changes in the blood that raise the risk of heart disease.
Researchers found a rise in inflammatory proteins—the kind your body produces when under stress. When these proteins remain elevated, they can damage your blood vessels and increase your risk for:
- Heart failure
- Coronary artery disease
- Irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
What’s most alarming? These effects were seen in young, healthy adults after only a few nights of poor sleep.
Normally, exercise boosts “good” proteins like BDNF and interleukin-6, which help protect the brain and heart. But when sleep was lacking, these benefits were blunted.
And here’s a twist: The time of day blood was drawn also changed the results—suggesting that poor sleep not only changes what’s in your blood, but when those changes appear.
Bottom line: Your body keeps score. Sacrificing sleep for screen time, social life, or productivity comes at a cost—especially to your heart.
Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night—your heart (and future self) will thank you.
