Ottawa and Orleans Pharmacist Minor Ailments Service
COVID-19 Antivirals: What You Need to Know
If you’ve recently tested positive for COVID-19 in the Ottawa and Orleans area, and are at higher risk for severe illness, antiviral treatment may reduce your risk of hospitalization or complications. The sooner treatment begins, the more effective it is — ideally within 5 days of symptom onset.
Centrum Pharmacy offers timely access to assessment and antiviral treatment for eligible patients — no appointment or referral required.
If you have respiratory symptoms or a virus, please bring a mask and be courteous to other patients by social distancing.
How a Centrum Pharmacist Can Help
Under Ontario’s Minor Ailments Prescribing Program, pharmacists are authorized to assess patients and prescribe Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) for COVID-19 in eligible cases.
At Centrum Pharmacy, our pharmacists can:
- Review your symptoms, test results, and medical history
- Determine your eligibility for antiviral therapy
- Prescribe Paxlovid when appropriate
- Provide guidance on medication timing, interactions, and side effects
- Coordinate with your primary care provider if needed
When Should You See a Pharmacist?

- You are within 5 days of symptom onset
- You are 60+ years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, lung disease)
- You live in a high-risk setting or are unvaccinated/incompletely vaccinated
We may refer you to a doctor or hospital if:
- You are experiencing severe symptoms (e.g., difficulty breathing, chest pain)
- You are outside the treatment window
- You are not eligible for Paxlovid due to drug interactions or kidney/liver function concerns
What to Bring
