When to Go to an Emergency Department

The simplest answer to this is that if you feel like you are in an emergency situation, you should head to the ER to exercise the most extreme caution. Alternately, you can call 911 to describe your symptoms or situation and be advised on the best course of action.

*Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department when you need care for symptoms like:

  • Traumas or injuries to the head
  • Deep cuts or wounds
  • Severe burns
  • Severe pain
  • Poisoning
  • Loss of consciousness – unable to wake
  • Sudden headaches, dizziness, weakness, numbness, trouble seeing or speaking
  • Mental health issues (overdose, thoughts of suicide, self-harm or harm to others)
  • Severely ill or injured children and infants
  • Persistent and severe chest pain
  • Symptoms of a stroke, including difficulty speaking, confusion, sudden weakness in an arm, leg, or your face
  • Major trauma (I.E. significant injury from a car accident, a fall, or other similar sudden incident)
  • Head injuries
  • Vomiting blood
  • Drug overdose
  • Severe burns
  • Seizures
  • Trouble breathing
  • Bleeding that won’t stop
  • Broken Bones
  • Partial or total amputation of a limb

*This is not a complete list. If you are unsure whether to go to the emergency department or come to the Walk-in Clinic, go the emergency department or call 911.
